It is referred to as the "powerhouse of the cell" because it is the main site of ATP (energy molecule) production.
It also plays a vital role in calcium storage, apoptosis(programmed cell death), detoxification in the liver cells, etc.
Therefore, humans cannot survive without mitochondria.
