Latent heat is the energy that is absorbed or released by the substance to change the physical state of the substance.
When the heat is released by the system then the latent heat is negative. If heat is added to the system then the positive sign is used and the negative sign is used when the heat flows out of the system.
For example, The Latent heat of condensation and the latent heat of fusion is negative since the heat is released by the system. The latent heat of boiling and latent heat of melting is positive because heat is added to the system.
