Question

Can Mutual inductance be negative?

Open in App
Solution

Definition of Mutual inductance-

  1. The Mutual inductance of coils is the ability of one coil to produce an induced EMF in the secondary coil.

Reason

  1. The Mutual inductance depends on the polarity of the mutual voltage in reference to the direction of the induced current.
  2. Mutual inductance is negative because a current in one coil will create a negative magnetic flux in the second coil.
  3. The mutual voltage in the second coil can be positive or negative based on the orientation of the coils

Therefore, the Mutual inductance can be negative.
