Question
Can nitrobenzene undergo Friedel Crafts acylation reaction?
Open in App
Solution
Friedel Crafts acylation reaction:
Friedel crafts acylation reaction is an organic reaction in which the addition of an acyl group occurs on an aromatic ring.
In this reaction, the aromatic group must have electron density to allow the substitution of the acyl group.
But, in nitrobenzene, the electron density on the aromatic ring is less due to the presence of the electron-withdrawing nitro group.
Due to this nitrobenzene cannot undergo Friedel crafts acylation under normal conditions.
