Question

Can plants live without mitochondria?

Open in App
Solution

Mitochondria

  1. It is a double membrane-bound organelle found in the cytoplasm of almost all eukaryotic cells.
  2. They are responsible for the energy-producing entity adenosine triphosphate (ATP) through aerobic oxidation-reduction reactions.
  3. It also has some other major functions including Calcium Homeostasis, apoptosis, etc.
  4. It has its own double-stranded circular DNA.
  5. Plants or any other eukaryotic organism cannot survive without mitochondrion.
  6. It is the only organelle that is able to produce energy in the form of ATP through cellular respiration.
  7. Metabolites undergo several rounds of chemical reactions like oxidation and reduction to generate cellular energy in the mitochondria.
  8. Without this cellular energy, it would not be possible for the cell to survive.
