Solution

Protists

  1. These are organisms that belong to the kingdom Protista.
  2. They are free-living or colonial unicellular eukaryotes like the amoeba, algae, paramecium, diatoms etc.
  3. They can be autotrophs (algae, diatoms), heterotrophs (paramecium, amoeba), or saprotrophs (slime molds).
  4. Protists can also be classified based on their locomotive adaptations.
  5. Protists are usually free-living and can move independently in an aquatic medium.
  6. The movement is mainly in search of food or to avoid an unfavourable environment.
  7. They include locomotory organs like flagella, cilia, pseudopodia and axopodia.
  8. Examples of locomotive protists include euglena which moves using flagella, paramecium using cilia, and amoeba using pseudopodia.
