Can sound travel through vacuum? Describe an experiment to explain your answer.

Open in App
Solution

No, sound cannot travel through vacuum. This is because sound needs a medium to travel through.

Experimental set up:

Procedure:

  1. Take an electric bell and an airtight glass jar which is connected to a vacuum pump.
  2. Suspend the electric bell in the jar.
  3. Connect the bell to a battery, the bell starts ringing and a sound is heard.
  4. Start the vacuum pump which withdraws all the air present in the jar.
Observations:
  1. When we connect bell to battery, we hear sound because air was present in the jar.
  2. As the air from the jar is being evacuated, the sound keeps getting feeble.
  3. When no air is left in the jar, we observe no sound coming out of the jar.
Conclusion:
  1. Sound requires a medium for its propagation.
  2. Sound cannot travel through vacuum.
