Question

Can the sum of a number and its reciprocal be 1 1/2? Why?

Open in App
Solution

Let one number be x
Its reciprocal be 1/x

According to the question

x + 1/x = 1 1/2
On taking lcm of the denominators
We get

(x^2 + 1)/x = 3/2
On rearranging the equation
2x^2 +2 - 3x =0

2x^2 - 3x + 2 =0

As this cannot be solved, a sum of a number and its reciprocal cannot be 3/2
