Question

Can there be a situation where it is necessary to increase air resistance on a falling object? How is it done?

Solution

Increasing the air resistance can be very desirable if you want the object to fall, and hit the ground, slower. The most obvious case is when parachuting. A falling object has to push the air out of the way. It is much easier for the air to push past a small object than a large one. Parachutes slow you down because they present a large surface area, making it harder for the air to get out of the way.
