Question

Can total entropy be negative?

Open in App
Solution

Entropy:

  1. Entropy is the measure of the randomness or disorderliness of a system.
  2. A change in entropy of a system is the amount of heat emitted or absorbed isothermally or reversibly divided by temperature i.e s=q1+q2T1+T2.
  3. If the amount of heat emitted is more than the heat absorbed then the total entropy is negative.
  4. So total entropy can be negative and in negative entropy a reaction becomes non-spontaneous.
