Question

Can transverse waves be produced in liquids?

Open in App
Solution

  1. The waves in which the particles vibrate in directions perpendicular to the direction of the propagation of the wave are known as Transverse Waves.
  2. These are shear waves and their propagation depends on the shear strength of the material.
  3. As solids have considerable shear strengths, transverse waves are able to propagate easily. But in the case of liquids and gases where no shear strength exists the waves will not be produced.
