Can we use transistor as a rectifier?

  1. A transistor is a three-terminal conductor that is typically employed as a switch or an amplifier. Devices like this always have clear instructions about using AC/DC.
  2. There are two type of transistors PNP and NPN and their schematic diagrams are shown below.
  3. A rectifier is an electrical device that converts alternating current (AC), which periodically reverses direction, to direct current (DC), which flows in only one direction.
  4. Rectifier is also of two types one is full wave rectifier and another one is half wave rectifier. The circuit diagrams of these rectifiers are shown below.
  5. So in order to use a transistor as a rectifier, either the emitter-base segment or the collector-base segment must be used to function as a rectifier.
  6. Hence, the transistor will work as a low current rectifier when we connect the base-collector region or the base-emitter region
  7. Therefore, we can use a transistor as a rectifier.
