Worms

  1. Worms are infectious organisms that use living cells as a host to mature from larvae or eggs to adult worms.
  2. Adult worms can reach up to 30cm long.
  3. Worms are soft, slender, and have elongated bodies.
  4. Worms are members of the Invertebrate phylum.
  5. Examples are roundworms, segmented worms, ribbon worms, spiny head worms, and spoon worms.

Ascariasis (roundworm)

  1. Ascaris is a nematode that infects the human intestine and causes ascariasis.
  2. Most of the time, children are infected by this parasite.
  3. The infection transfers from faeces to the host cell through flies. The entry point of this parasite is the mouth by taking unhygienic food and water.
  4. They hatch the egg and pass through the intestines to the lungs through blood cells.
  5. In the lungs, they break into alveoli and move to the trachea where they are swallowed and coughed.
  6. When larva passes through the stomach for the second time they mature into adult worms.
