Question

Can you explain how PCR can detect very low amounts of DNA?

Solution

  • PCR is a technique in which a particular sequence of DNA is amplified using controlled conditions. It amplifies the amount of the desired sequence of DNA exponentially up to certain cycles.
  • PCR is based on in vitro replication of specific DNA sequences. To start DNA replication, only a small amount of sample DNA is required. DNA polymerase replicates the desired region of DNA and as each cycle of PCR goes on, more copies of the desired sequence of DNA are generated. It is a sensitive technique that requires a very small amount of sample DNA to initiate with.
