Can you give an example of catabolism?

Open in App
Solution

Catabolism:

  1. Metabolism are of two types- catabolism and anabolism.
  2. Catabolism is when large complex nutrient molecules are broken down in the body to produce simple, smaller molecules.

Example:

  1. An example of catabolism is glycolysis.
  2. In this process, glucose is broken down by a series of enzyme-catalysed reactions to pyruvate and energy (ATP).
  3. Pyruvate is then converted to acetyl-CoA.
  4. The citric acid cycle is also a catabolic process in which this acetyl-CoA is finally converted to two molecules each of CO2 and water.
