Question

Can you show an activity of Brownian motion with potassium

Open in App
Solution

Process which provides the best evidence for the motion of particles in matter are :

1. Brownian Motion
2. Diffusion.

Aim : To demonstrate the motion of particles move continuously.

Apparatus : Beaker, water and potassium permanganate [KMnO4] crystals.

Procedure :
1. Take a beaker filled with 100ml of water.
2. Slowly add 5gm of KMnO4 crystals to water.
3. Observe the changes

Observations:
Both KMnO4 crystals and water are made up of particles .
The particles of water are colouless and KMnO4 crystals are pink. When KMnO4 are added to water, slowly we can see the water colour changes to pink. Because both water particles and KMnO4 particles move continuously and without stirring they got mixed.

Conclusion : This activity concludes that,Particles of matter move continuously.(Brownian motion)
