Solution

An alternate name for impure substances is a mixture. A mixture consists of two or more substances mixed in variable proportions and the constituents can be separated by physical means. Different kinds of atoms form the mixture. So it is also known as an impure substance.

There are two types of mixture:

(a) Homogeneous mixture: Homogenous mixture is a type of mixture in which the composition remains the same throughout the solution. No suspended particles are visible in this type of mixture. The substances completely dissolve with each other. For example, when we add salt to water we can see the composition is the same throughout the solution.

(b) Heterogeneous mixture: Heterogeneous mixture is a type of mixture in which the composition of the constituents is non-uniform. We can see different phases of the constituents in a heterogeneous mixture. Suspended particles are visible in this type of mixture. For example, if we dissolve sand into a glass of water, we can see suspended particles of sand floating in the water and the composition is not uniform throughout the solution.
