Canal ray experiment lead to the discovery of protons. In this experiment a perforated carthode was used. The cathode rays started to move towards anode. During its motion, cathode rays ionise the gas molecules present in the discharge tube, resulting in the formation of anode rays. If the gas was hydrogen, the resulting anode rays were protons.
