Question

Canal rays obtained from different gases have different mass and charge.Explain.

Open in App
Solution

  • Canal rays(anode rays) are streams of positively charged particles which move toward the cathode in a discharge tube when high voltage electricity is passed through a gas at very low pressure taken in a discharge tube.
  • The electrons emitted from the cathode collide with the gas atoms found in the tube, knocking out electrons from the atom.
  • When electrons are knocked out, atoms get a positive charge.
  • As the atoms of different gases have a different number of protons present in them they will have different mass and charge.
  • Hence, Canal rays obtained from different gases have different mass and charges.
