Solution

Ax km in 1 lt 1 km 1x lt petrol
B(x+1) km in 1 lt 1 km 1x+1 lt petrol
(i) for 400 km : A 400 km 400x lt of petrol
B400 km 400x+1 lt of petrol
(ii) A=B+4 lt 400x=400x+1+4400(x+1)=400x+4x(x+1)
400x+400=400x+4x2+4x4x24x400=0
x2+x100=0 x=1±1+4×1002=1±4012 lt.
