Insulin is a peptide hormone produced by the pancreas in animals including humans. Insulin decreases blood glucose level. On the other hand, another pancreatic hormone glucagon serves to increase blood glucose level. Thus, a constant level of blood glucose is maintained by the balance between these two hormones. Immediately after a meal, insulin is secreted and it increases carbohydrate or sugar metabolism while in between meals glucagon is secreted and it increases blood glucose level.
