Carbon, the group 14 element in the periodic table has a million compounds because of its some special conditions like- catenation(self linking property), multiple bonds formation( single, double, and triple), Isomerism(carbon can change geometrical position), and tetra valency(Carbon can form 4 bonds).

Due to all these special qualities carbon can make lots of different kinds of compounds.

(a) The reaction of carbon with Chlorine: The reaction of carbon with chlorine gives out carbon tetrachloride.

(b) The reaction of carbon with oxygen: The reaction of carbon with oxygen(if in a sufficient amount) gives out carbon-di-oxide and carbon mono-oxide(if insufficient).
