Carbon monoxide _________ the oxygen carrying capacity of the blood.

Open in App
Solution

Carbon monoxide:

  • The incomplete burning of fossil fuels such as petrol and diesel leads to the formation of carbon monoxide(CO).
  • Carbon monoxide is a highly poisonous gas. When inhaled, it combines with the hemoglobin present in the blood to form a stable compound called carboxyhemoglobin.
  • This reduces the oxygen-carrying capacity of the blood.
  • Breathing in carbon monoxide causes headache, and dizziness and can even lead to death.

Therefore, carbon monoxide reduces the oxygen-carrying capacity of the blood.
