J. J. Thomson performed the cathode ray tube experiment. In this experiment, a beam of particles called cathode rays originated from the cathode.
When the cathode rays were passed through the charged plates, they got deflected towards the positively charged plate. This indicated that the cathode ray particles were negatively charged. These negatively charged particles were later termed as electrons.
