Question

Cathode rays consist of only electrons. So how are cathode rays able to produce light when they strike the zinc sulphide screen ? I dont think they would be able to do so as they are extremely light particles.

Solution

They strike the screen as they are fast moving particles. The voltage that is applied between the electrodes accelerates these extremely light (low mass particles) to high velocities. When these fast moving particles strike the glass wall they transfer their energy to glass atoms and fall back to their ground level hence emit light that is observed as a glow on the glass surface.
