Question

Cathode rays obtained from different gases have same mass and charge. Explain.

Open in App
Solution

  • Cathode rays are nothing but beams of electrons.
  • To produce cathode rays from a gas, take the gas inside a container.
  • Pass cathode rays (negatively charged) from a cathode through the container.
  • The rays will strike and ionise the gas taken inside the container.
  • The electrons that were ejected from the gas ionisation will move to the anode.
  • Thus these rays are nothing but electrons. So irrespective of the nature of the gas taken we get electrons.
  • All electrons have the same charge and equal mass.
  • Charge=1.6×10-19 C
  • mass=9.1×10-31 Kg
