Cell theory
In 1838, a German botanist, Matthias Schleiden observed that the plants are made up of various types of cells and a group of cells make a tissue.
Around the same time, a British Zoologist, Theodor Schwann found that the animal cells are covered with a thin layer.
This was later called plasma membrane.
Cell theory
Schwann also discovered that the plant cells are covered with the outermost membrane called the cell wall which is unique only to the plant cells.
Together, Schleiden (botanist) and Schwann (zoologist) postulated cell theory which states that plants and animals are made up of cells and the products of the cell.
Final answer
