Question

Cell (X) has undergone one mitotic division and cell (Y) has finished one meiotic division. How many daughter cells will be formed by X and Y? Give reason to support your answer.

Solution

Cell (X)

  1. Mitosis is an equational division where the number of chromosomes of two daughter cells formed are same as the parent cell.
  2. Here, from one parent cell, two daughter cells are formed.

Thus, cell (X) has 2 daughter cells.

Cell (Y)

  1. Meiosis occurs in two phases: meiosis I and meiosis II where chromosome number of daughter cells are halved as compared to that of parent cell.
  2. At the end of meiosis, four haploid daughter cells are formed from one parent cell.

Therefore, cell (Y) has 4 daughter cells.

Thus, the total number of daughter cells that will be formed by cell (X) and cell (Y) is 2+4 = 6.
