Platelets are also known as thrombocytes. They play an important role in clotting of blood. When an injury occurs to the body tissue, the damaged blood vessels release chemicals which cause aggregation of platelets at the wound site. Platelets secrete an enzyme thromboplastin or thrombokinase which converts prothrombin into thrombin. Thrombokinase is also secreted from the damaged blood vessels. Thrombin acts as an enzyme and converts plasma protein fibrinogen into fibrin threads which form a clot at the wound site and bleeding is stopped.
