Cellulose and hemicellulose are synthesized by Golgi apparatus. Immediately after nuclear division, the phragmoplast or cell plate appears across the equator of the cell. At the end of mitosis, granules arising from the Golgi complex arrange themselves on the equator of the cell. They then fuse to form the cell plate. The cell plate grows in thickness by the addition of new material from the complex. Narrow openings, the plasmodesmata, are left in the cell plate and cytoplasmic connections between the cells are retained through them. During the development of the cell wall, the middle lamella is formed first. It consists of a gelatinous material which is mainly calcium pectate. The primary cell wall is then secreted against the middle lamella. It consists of intertwined fibers of cellulose. After the period of growth is over, a secondary cell wall may be laid down between the primary cell wall and the cytoplasm of the cell.
