They all cause common feature of which is recurring bouts of fever that shake the patient with alternative shivering and sweating. Plasmodium falciparum causes malignant tertian malaria in which the fever cycle is of 48 hours. The periodicity of the erythrocytic schizogony is irregular which often causes daily attacks of fever. It shows signs of liver, kidney or respiratory failure and blocking of the small blood vessels of the brain which is a characteristic of cerebral malaria.
