Question

Question 4
Certain force acting on 20 kg mass changes its velocity from 5 ms1 to 2 ms1. Calculate the work done by the force.

Open in App
Solution

Kinetic energy is given by the expression,(Ek)v=12mv2
Where,
EK= Kinetic energy of the object moving with a velocity, v

(i) Kinetic energy when the object was moving with a velocity 5 ms1
(Ek)5=12×20×(5)2=250 J

(ii) Kinetic energy when the object was moving with a velocity 2 ms1
(Ek)2=12×20×(2)2=40 J

The work done by the force = (Ek)2(Ek)5
= 40 J250 J
= 210 J
The negative sign indicates the retarding nature of the applied force.
