Question

CH3CH2OH can be converted into CH3CHO by . . . .
(a) catalytic hydrogenation
(b) treatment with LiAIH4
(c) treatment with pyridinium chlorochromate
(d) treatment with KMnO4

Solution

Ethanal (CH3CHO) is an oxidised product of ethanol. Pyridinium chlorochromate (C5H5+NHClCrO3) oxidises primary alcohols to aldehydes. Strong oxidising agents such as KMnO4 are used for getting carboxylic acid from alcohols.
The oxidation process can be stopped at the aldehyde stage if Cr(VI) reagents such as Collin's reagent (CrO3.2C5H5N), Corey's reagent or pyridinium chlorochromate and pyridinium dichromate [(C5H5NH2)2+Cr2O27] in anhydrous medium are used as the oxidising agent. So, the correct option is (c).
