Question

CH3Br + 2Na + BrCH3---> CH3-CH3 + 2NaBr

In this reaction, why bromo methane is added 2 times on the reactant side?

Solution

This is because, the carbon chain has to be extended. So, two bromomethane are used to eliminate Br and join together to form ethane molecule. How will ethane form from single molecule! The carbon chain is being doubled, and hence 2 molecules are needed.
