Chanakya on his way home saw a farmer digging the soil. He observed that the digging tool had an iron blade fixed to a wooden handle. He wondered how the iron blade gets fixed to a wooden handle even when the iron ring is smaller than a wooden handle. What do you think can be the way to do this?
We need the ring to get bigger. What can we do?
Metals expand on heating. Iron is a metal. So, the iron ring will expand if we heat it. This means that the handle can easily fit inside the ring. But now it will be loose right?
Metals contract on cooling. So, the iron ring will become smaller if we just let it cool down. Once it gets smaller, it will tightly hold on to the handle. This helps it maintain a sturdy grip.
