Erythroblastosis foetalis
Erythroblastosis foetalis results from Rh incompatibility, which may develop when a lady with Rh-ve blood conceives a foetus with Rh+ve blood.
In this, the red blood cells (erythrocytes) of the second foetus and onwards are destroyed in a maternal immune reaction.
Erythroblastosis foetalis
When Rh-ve mother with no Rh antigens conceives Rh+ve baby who has Rh antigens, the delivery of the foetus causes contact of foetal blood with the mother’s blood.
This develops Rh antibodies in the mother’s blood which stays for months and years after delivery first delivery.
After conceiving a second Rh+ve foetus, the maternal antibodies start attacking the foetal RBCs having the Rh factor. This can have fatal consequences. This condition is termed as erythroblastosis foetalis.
