Dear Student,

Sophie's mother is the epitome of a working-class homemaker who has resigned herself to live a mundane life. She does not harbour any dreams. She acts as a warning to Sophie about her future if she lets go of her dream.

Derek is the younger brother of Sophie. He was dismissive of Sophie's unrealistic dreams. Unlike Sophie, he was a pessimist.
