Question

Chemical fertilisers add nutrition to the soil. So, how do they cause soil pollution?

Open in App
Solution

  • Fertilisers and pesticides are added to increase the soil’s fertility, but over a period of time, they are responsible for the depletion in its quality.

  • The continuous use of fertilisers and pesticides increases the acidity of the soil, and microorganisms present in the soil are extremely sensitive to the changes in the pH of soil.

  • As a result, when the acidity of the soil increases over a limit, these microorganisms are no longer able to survive on the piece of land, hence making it devoid of organic matter, which is essential for maintaining the quality of soil.
  • Thus, chemical fertilizers cause degradation in the quality of soil, leading to loss of fertility is known as soil pollution.
