Lets take reaction of chlorine with hot solution of NaOH as a medium which has higher pH of 12.
Cl2+NaOHNaClO3[A]+NaCl[B]+H2O
In [A], oxidation no. of Cl is +5.
In [B], oxidation no. of Cl is -1.
