Chlorophyll is highly sensitive to light and too much light can destroy it. The formation of chlorophyll itself depends on the exposure of the plant to light. This can be noticed in grass/plants that grow under a stone turns yellowish due to new chlorophyll not being formed. There are certain other pigments surrounding the chlorophyll molecule which protect the chlorophyll from excessive amount of sunlight.
