Digestion is the process of break down of complex food materials into simpler substances. The digested food is mainly absorbed in small intestine and transported throughout the body.

The undigested and unabsorbed food from the small intestine passes into the large intestine where the water from the undigested food is absorbed rendering the left over in a semi-solid state.

The semi-solid food is stored in the rectum. The rectum is the last part, that holds the waste. Later it is eliminated from the body in the form of faeces. This process of elimination of waste from the body is known as egestion or defecation.

Large intestine secretes mucous which, lubricate feces and facilitate its flow into the rectum, where it is stored temporarily.
