The absolute value of an integer is the actual distance of the integer from zero, on the number line. Therefore, the absolute value is always a positive value or zero but cannot be a negative number.

From the above definition, we can conclude:
  • Non-negative (positive numbers including zero) number's absolute values are always the numbers themselves. For example: |5|=5,|0|=0
  • Negative number's absolute values are positive always. For example, |5|=5, and 5>5.
Therefore, the absolute value of any negative integer always exceeds the number itself.
