Guard cells; controlling size of stomata
The figure shows stomatal guard cells. These cells act as gatekeepers, controlling the size of the stomatal pore. They can also close and open the stomatal pore based on the plant’s requirement of carbon dioxide and water. During daytime, when the guard cells become filled with water (turgid) the stomatal pore opens and at night when the guard cells lose water (flaccid) the stomatal pore closes.
