The molecular formula of heavy water is D2O. Deuterium is an isotope of hydrogen. The atomic mass of hydrogen is 1.008 amu and the atomic mass of deuterium is 2.014 amu.

The hydrogen atom does not contain neutron while deuterium contains one neutron. So, heavy water is 10% heavier than normal water as it contains one extra neutron than hydrogen.
