Karnataka has rich and abundant iron ore deposits, especially in the Bababudangiri hills. Sir M. Visveswaraiah started South India’s first-ever Iron and Steel industry, then known as Mysuru Iron and Steel Industries Limited or MSIL was set up at Bhadravati in Shivamogga district in 1923.

60 years later, this industry was handed over to Steel Authority of India Limited or SAIL. Today it is known as Visveswaraiah Iron and Steel Industry or VISL.
