The moon does not produce its own light, whereas the Sun and other stars do. We see the moon because the sunlight falling on the moon gets reflected towards us. The position of the moon changes due to its revolution around the earth and hence the portion of moon reflecting sunlight towards us changes. It takes approximately one month for moon to complete one revolution around the earth. So after one month, the shapes of moon are repeated.
