Choose the correct options regarding treading on tyres.
To decrease friction
To increase friction
Treads on the tyres help in increasing grip on soft surfaces. These treads can be thought of "spaces" on the tyre which can accumulate small amounts of matter - in most cases, it would be water during the rainy season. Treads also sink into soft surfaces and thereby increasing the grip. This relates to the plowing effect where friction exists when a soft surface gets pressed on because of the deformations on the softer surface. The presence of these treads trap water typically on a rainy day and spills it out - which makes tyres more effective if water kept slipping on them (which is the case in case treading wasn't done).
However, on rough surfaces where the advantages of the plowing effect is not seen, the presence of these treads reduce friction. This is one reason why racing cars do not have treads on their tyres.
