The body of the earthworm is made-up of 100-150 segments. In a mature worm, segments 14-16 are covered by a prominent dark band of glandular tissue. This is known as the clitellum. It secretes the material for the formation of egg case.

On the ventro-lateral side, in segments 6-9, are four pairs of spermathecae. They receive and store spermatozoa during copulation.

Female genital pore is a minute median opening on the ventral side of the 14th segment. Eggs pass out of the body through it.

The characteristic feature of the intestine after 26th segment is the presence of an internal median fold of dorsal wall called typhosole.

Gizzard lies between the segments 8-9th. It helps in grinding the soil particles and decaying leaves.
