Question

Choose the correct sequence of the steps involved in the water cycle.

i. Water evaporates from the water reservoirs present on land.

iv. Rainwater again flows into different water reservoirs on land.
v. When the clouds become big and heavy, they fall down as rain.

Solution

The correct option is C i, ii, vi, iii, v, iv

The continuous movement of water from the earth's surface to the atmosphere and back to the surface as rain is known as the water cycle.

  • Water from all the reservoirs present on land evaporates due to heat. Even plants contribute to evaporation by the process of transpiration.
  • It then exists in the form of water vapours in the atmosphere. The water vapours expand and cool as they go up. Due to cooling, they form water droplets by condensation. These water droplets accumulate and form the clouds.
  • When the clouds become large and heavy, the water droplets fall down as rain.
  • The rainwater flows back into the rivers, lakes and seas. All of the water that falls on the land does not immediately flow back into the sea. Some of it seeps into the soil and becomes the part of underground reservoirs of freshwater.
