There are four basic mechanism by which biological evolution takes place and these include mutation, migration, genetic drift and natural selection. Natural selection produces evolutionary changes, when in a population some individuals that possess certain inherited characteristics, produce more surviving offspring than the individuals lacking these characteristics. As a result, the population will gradually come to include more individuals with the advantageous characteristics. In this way, the population evolves and becomes better adapted to its local circumstances.
